Decorating for the holidays

As we approach the end of 2012, we are nearing the holiday season.

One of the most popular items at this time of year is a fireplace mantle. A mantel makes a profound statement in a room at a relatively low cost. Mantles can be as simple as a shelf or a more decorative full surround. In addition to the decorative aspect of a mantel there is a practical aspect as well. Mantels provide the shelf space to display photos, vases and works of art. They can also hide old brick projections without incurring the cost of having the brick removed.

When choosing a mantel style there are several key questions that you will want to ask yourself:

When was my house built?

How is my house decorated?

What is my lifestyle?

What is my vision when finished?

What mantel styles do I like?

Would I like to stain or paint?

Our mantles are made by a local furniture maker who also makes museum displays. We do not stock mantels; every single one is custom made in a variety of wood species. All of our styles are architecturally accurate for different periods of Portland homes from Victorian all the way to the modern. If you are thinking about purchasing a mantle for the holidays, now is the time to do it. The holidays are right around the corner and it takes some time to have a mantle built, installed and finished. For your convenience, we have made our mantle measurement sheets available to be printed on our website.

As always, our sales staff is here to answer any questions you may have.
